General surgery is a surgical specialty that typically deals with trauma and infections. The broad areas of their practice include cardiothoracic, vascular, endocrine/metabolic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, urological, and more.

There are many types of procedures performed by general surgeons like an open surgery or laparoscopic surgery and even by cutting through the skin.

Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac surgery is performed by general cardiac surgeons and usually covers a variety of surgical procedures for patients with heart problems. It involves the removal, repair, or replacement of various parts of the heart such as valves and arteries, etc.

This type of surgery normally requires anesthesia and involves major steps involved in it like performing open surgeries, catheterization, drilling through the chest to insert instruments, insertion of metal stents to expand chambers in the veins and arteries, etc.

The process involves both manual manipulations as well as surgical technologies in performing major operations for cardiac diseases or other conditions just like that in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

In CABG operation, the patient’s side branches are taken to form a new route for the circulation of blood.

Another important procedure that is performed in cardiac surgery is pulmonary valve replacement. In this procedure, the damaged valve in the heart is replaced by a healthy one.

There are also open surgeries done in cases when extensive damage to the heart tissue has occurred and surgical repairs are needed to fix them.

These surgeries include operations done on coronary arteries and even valves, removing blood clots from chambers or repairing leaking valves, etc.

Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is used to treat various diseases of blood vessels like those in the heart, artery walls, and veins. The vascular surgeons are responsible for performing a lot of operations related to the blood vessels as well as causes that occur such as atherosclerosis, stroke or peripheral vascular disease, etc.

This type of surgery involves major steps involved in it like inserting catheters through veins and arteries for different tests and then performing procedures on them.

Urologic Surgery

Urologic surgeons deal with a wide range of diseases encompassing all the patients who have urinary tract problems or sexual abnormality etc.

It includes operations such as hypospadias operation which is performed on children to create an opening in the penis for urine to drain from, prostate removal surgery, and even vasectomy.

It is performed mainly by internal medicine doctors and some general surgeons with special training.

Endocrine/Metabolic Surgeries

Endocrine or metabolic surgeons are responsible for performing major surgical operations such as removing a thyroid gland to treat hyperthyroidism, removing parathyroid glands, or even stomach tumors.

Endocrine/metabolic surgery is usually done after a diagnosis has been made by a special type of doctor known as an endocrinologist. They are responsible for diagnosing the disease and also administering certain chemicals that have surgical results on the body.

Gastrointestinal Surgery

Gastrointestinal surgeries are performed in conditions like cancers of the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas or intestinal obstruction, etc.

It is performed mostly by general surgeons as well as other physicians since it involves surgical procedures in parts of the gastrointestinal system or sometimes one area like removing tumors in part or whole.
